Elvis Presley and Eminem Rights Holders File Separate Lawsuits Against AI Music Startup Suno
Rights holders controlling Elvis Presley's musical estate and the publishing company representing Eminem's catalog have filed 2 separate lawsuits against artificial intelligence music generator Suno, accusing the company of unauthorized training and output cloning. Reported on November 8, 2026 by The Verge weekend editor Terrence O'Brien—who has covered consumer technology and digital media for more than 18 years—following initial reporting by Billboard, the complaints allege that Suno's generative models produce audio tracks and lyrics that closely imitate the signature styles of both artists.
Beyond federal copyright claims, both lawsuits accuse Suno of violating Tennessee's Ensuring Likeness Voice and Image Security (ELVIS) Act, a state statute enacted specifically to protect recording artists and performers against unauthorized artificial intelligence voice clones and digital likeness replication. According to the filings, users on Suno's platform were able to generate synthetic tracks that replicated recognizable vocal timbres and lyrical phrasing associated with Elvis Presley and Eminem.
The 2 complaints mirror a lawsuit filed against Suno in September 2026 by singer-songwriter Jason Isbell and expand a growing docket of intellectual property litigation against the AI audio company, which already faces pending lawsuits from major record labels and publishers including Sony, Universal Music Group (UMG), and Reservoir Media.
In an emailed statement to The Verge, Suno spokesperson Cat McCormack stated that the company's terms of service explicitly prohibit the unauthorized use of an artist's work. McCormack added that Suno blocks user prompts containing specific artists' names and song titles and screens user-uploaded audio files and lyrics to prevent protected material from entering its generation pipeline.
