Google DeepMind Randomized Trial Shows Gemini Guided Learning Boosts Classroom Math Progress
An eight-week randomized controlled trial of Google DeepMind's Gemini-powered Guided Learning tool in Sierra Leone demonstrated up to 2.5 years of equivalent math progress.

Google DeepMind released empirical findings from an eight-week trial of Guided Learning, an artificial intelligence tutoring program using Gemini to support secondary mathematics instruction in Sierra Leone classrooms. Supported by Google.org, the Gates Foundation, EducAid, Laterite, and Oxford MeasurEd, the study measured how Socratic dialogue models perform inside resource-constrained schools. Every research official involved in the evaluation reported that students using Guided Learning achieved a gain of +0.258 standard deviations in math scores compared to the control group.
Learning gains proved especially strong in classrooms where teachers incorporated Gemini into roughly half their lessons, targeting 12 hours of AI-integrated instruction during the eight-week trial. Students in those 12-hour classroom cohorts achieved gains equivalent to roughly 1.8 to 2.5 years of typical learning progress. Furthermore, 69 percent of participating students met or exceeded usage targets during the deployment, far surpassing the typical 5 percent engagement rate seen in voluntary educational technology programs.
An analysis of more than 113,000 student-model interactions revealed that students used the tool to build conceptual understanding in 91.4 percent of conversations rather than seeking quick answers. Guided by pedagogical system prompts, Gemini responded by posing scaffolding questions in 76 percent of its messages and providing direct solutions in only 2 percent of cases. Education researchers at UC Berkeley, Palo Alto institutes, and school districts in San Francisco and San Ramon noted that Socratic scaffolding prevents passive answer copying.
Across Contra Costa County and Silicon Valley, public school board members and curriculum committees are reviewing the Sierra Leone results as local districts draft AI instruction policies. Officials with the San Ramon Valley Unified School District and county education department offices emphasized that randomized controlled trials provide essential evidence before public grant funding is allocated to classroom software. Google DeepMind is now conducting additional pre-registered randomized controlled trials globally and releasing an open playbook on RCT methodology with Fab AI.

Additional multi-country classroom evaluation updates will be presented to the state education commission during the spring term.
