Bay Area — OpenAI introduces Astra for Law, AI foundation for legal firms and technology companies

OpenAI unveiled Astra for Law on Friday in San Francisco, introducing a specialized artificial intelligence foundation that combines the GPT-6 Astra model with dedicated security settings, custom analytical instructions, and authoritative research tools for professional legal work. Engineered for law firms and legal technology enterprises across San Francisco, San Ramon, and national legal markets, Astra for Law incorporates a comprehensive legal search index covering more than 230 million URLs of United States case law, statutes, regulations, court rules, and administrative decisions.

In benchmark testing across 200 complex United States legal research questions, Astra for Law passed strict correctness evaluations on 54.0 percent of questions compared to 38.7 percent for standard GPT-6 Astra using general web search alone, representing a 40 percent relative improvement in accuracy. OpenAI confirmed that leading legal technology API customers including Harvey and Legora will build directly on Astra for Law to power their specialized client applications. Furthermore, OpenAI is launching 26 new ecosystem plugins that connect ChatGPT directly to specialist legal software platforms such as Relativity and Clio.

To ensure enterprise-grade confidentiality and compliance with bar association rules, OpenAI is collaborating closely with global law firm Latham & Watkins to design granular information permissions, strict ethical walls, custom client instructions, and firm-wide administrative oversight controls. Corporate legal departments in Walnut Creek, Oakland, and Silicon Valley emphasized that automated ethical walls and verifiable citation indexing are mandatory prerequisites before deploying generative systems across sensitive litigation or regulatory filings.

Astra for Law will initially be offered to selected law firms through OpenAI's Trusted Access program within ChatGPT and Codex, with broader programmatic availability coming soon to the developer API. State bar technology committees and judicial administration boards across California have closely monitored advancements in grounded legal search indices that reduce citation fabrication and streamline statutory analysis. Legal aid clinics in Alameda and Contra Costa counties noted that improved statutory search tools could also expand pro bono research capacity.

Managing partners, corporate general counsels, and legal technology developers can examine security whitepapers, benchmark methodology reports, and Trusted Access enrollment criteria online at openai.com. Technical demonstrations showcasing the 26 legal ecosystem plugins and Relativity integrations will be conducted for Bay Area legal operations teams next Thursday at 1:00 PM. Questions regarding enterprise API onboarding or data governance specifications may be directed to OpenAI's enterprise legal solutions team at (415) 890-5400.
